Kang Learning Group began with one tutor, Phillip Kang (Phil to his students), and a belief that students do their best work when someone is genuinely invested in them.
A future ophthalmologist who loves to teach
Phillip is a medical student on the path to becoming an ophthalmologist. Medicine is his profession, but teaching is his true passion. Even with a demanding training schedule, he has never stepped away from tutoring, because helping a student understand something for the first time is the part of his work he loves most.
His own experience climbing through rigorous coursework and high-stakes exams shapes how he teaches. He knows how it feels to prepare for tests that matter, and he brings that understanding, along with patience and encouragement, to every session.
From part-time gig to growing practice
At first, tutoring was something Phil did on the side. Then word spread. Families told other families, the number of students kept climbing, and the difference he was making in the community became impossible to ignore. So did his desire to help more students than one person could take on.
To meet that demand without losing what made it work, Phil began hiring a handful of talented tutors. That was the start of Kang Learning Group.
It has always been about more than academics
When Phil asked his students what made their sessions different, they kept giving the same answer. Plenty of tutors can walk through the material. What stood out about Phil was his steady enthusiasm and his real interest in how each student was doing.
That encouragement made students want to push further, and it gave them a reason to take pride in what they accomplished. Strong academic support mattered, but the motivation behind it is what carried students forward.
A team that shares the approach
Phil built Kang Learning Group so that approach would reach every student we work with. We look for educators who care about the profession, bring a positive attitude to every session, and take pride in their students' growth. We recruit carefully, train personally, and keep looking for better ways to teach in an education landscape that never stands still.
Our goal is for parents, students, and tutors alike to learn and thrive together.
Still teaching
We think we are different from most tutoring companies because Phil still spends so much of his time teaching. Alongside running the team, he continues to work directly with students, especially on test prep and college applications. He began as a generalist, tutoring across many subjects, and has spent extensive time with students who struggle with ADHD and executive function. That breadth gives him a full view of the high school curriculum and of the many different ways students learn.
Our work is rooted in an honest, authentic approach to teaching that emphasizes skill-building and long-term success. We do not believe in a one-size-fits-all method. Good tutoring is personal coaching, so we have built a team of tutors who combine impressive academic backgrounds with the ability to connect with students and help them grow beyond any single class or exam.
Small on purpose
We have deliberately kept our team small and limited the number of students we take on each year. Larger tutoring companies often start with good intentions, but the quality of instruction tends to slip as they expand. That is one reason Phil still teaches, and why he personally trains and supports each tutor, so every family receives the same level of care and attention he would give.
Support for the whole journey
Finally, we have shaped our team to help families through the complexities of today's college admissions process. We support students in their coursework and in their application essays, and we will always be honest about how best to use your time and resources to strengthen your student's academic profile.
